As I complete research on earlier types, I've been giving presentations about my findings. Below you'll find all of these as well as a few other related videos.
Most presentations will be part of the NNP Symposium, an online numismatic conference held twice per year that began in 2020. If you want to catch future presentations live, keep an eye on the schedule there!
The Gaku Ichibu was minted in 1599. The first of the 250-year series of gold ichibu, there’s shockingly little information available on the Gaku Ichibu in English. This presentation chronicles my research into the piece with many new insights on the type never before published outside of Japan, as well as corrections to current English references.
This introductory presentation covers the series of rectangular silver coins issued in pre-Meiji Japan from 1765 to 1868. These enigmatic issues are even more difficult to research than they are to collect, but this presentation provides an overview of the history, identifying features, and pricing trends behind each issue. No prior knowledge of the series or Japanese history is required. If you're new to the series, this is a great starting point!
Keicho ichibu were minted from 1601 to 1695, and there's been no significant research into this wildly diverse issue in the English-speaking world. Depending on the source, it's claimed that there are anywhere from three to twelve significant types. Follow along as I untangle this mess, separating out the major and minor types, with significantly more historical context than published anywhere else in English.
I'm often asked how I got interested in this series, and this video is the answer. I was asked to make a video for the NNP about coins that aren't round, and I stumbled upon a silver ichibu. At the time, I couldn't find any information online other than what's included in the video (which, as it turns out, is partially wrong). I was frustrated by the lack of information online, and down the rabbit hole I went.
In March of 2021, I was a guest on The Coin Show podcast, which has always been my favorite numismatic podcast. We talked about bar money, so feel free to give it a watch! You can also listen wherever podcasts are found (this is episode 182).
